My name is Jack McDermott, I’m an applied ecologist, fisheries scientist, and conservation photographer based out of San Diego, California.

I am broadly interested in the application of scientific research to inform conservation and management decision-making. I have diverse fisheries experience, spanning work as a fisheries observer on longline and driftnet vessels, groundfish sampler for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and project coordinator for a salmon recovery organization in Seattle. I am driven by the inherent challenge of balancing human and ecological needs across natural systems.

My photography shifted from a commercial focus towards scientific communication. From fish to frogs, I am passionate about documenting wild spaces, biodiversity, and conservation stories. On this site, you’ll find a portfolio of my personal favorite works.

Currently, I am a master’s student at San Diego State University and a research assistant for the Fisheries and Climate Toolkit, an initiative advancing climate-resilient management for three marine protected areas in the Northeast U.S. Learn more about my research.
